FATHER'S DAY

by Kelsi in , , ,

My son and I are getting ready to celebrate the #1 Dad in our life tomorrow. Breakfast will include a frittata with yukon golds and lots of herbs from the garden and per my son's request, "A LOT of bacon" (presumably so he doesn't have to battle his dad for it). If you need a good frittata recipe Pamela Salzman has some great ones

Father's Day or not, here are some good gifts to celebrate the great husband, brother or father in your life...

This beautiful low-profile wallet from Grovemade in Portland...

A pair of Allbirds...

Jim Olson's gorgeous new book...

I LOVE the Marie Veronique skincare collaboration with Kristina Holey. Marie just released a new line for men, though I would happily use it myself. I have my eye on the shave prep + daily wash as well as the shaving oil as something we would both enjoy...

This razor would be a nice upgrade to go with it...

If you're in need of more inspiration, check out Huckberry which always has a stellar collection of great stuff. I dare you not to find something there whatever your price range.

Hostess Gifts, Stocking Stuffers + More

by Kelsi in

Whether you need a hostess gift, a stocking stuffer, something special for your wife, or something for yourself, here is a round-up of some knock-out gifts for giving this season.

If you live in Seattle, these are a few of the local shops you should hit up...

Stock & Pantry on Capitol Hill

Flora and Henri in Pioneer Square

Marine Area 7 in Madison Valley

Little Lago in Portage Bay is a fantastic place to not only pick up something for lunch but is also an expertly curated shop and has you covered for the perfect hostess gift. This little Italian grocer has a lovely selection of wines, olive oils, Rancho Gordo beans and these gorgeous jams from Ayako & Family, which are my personal go-to gift for any occasion...

Ayako jam.jpg

I also personally would love to have this tote I just saw on their site...

I'm gifting many jars of this wonderful body scrub from Seattle company Herbivore...

Herbivore Coco Rose.jpg

I love Donald Robertson and would love to spread some holiday cheer with his new book...

For the cook in your life, you can't go wrong with a beautiful apron from Hedley & Bennett (you can even order them in petite for short people like me)...

Hedley Bennett Beluga apron.jpg

A fun game to play after the kids have been put to bed...

A sweet universal cheese knife...

I love this set of ornaments from MOMA...

A nice pair of gloves for the man in your life...

Or an equally cool but more rugged pair...

I think this scratch off world map poster would be cool for friends of ours whose kiddos are already serious world travelers...

These teakwood and tobacco candles are my go to at home...

I have loved using this beautiful ceramic diffuser this past year. It sits on my nightstand and I use it every night, almost always with eucalyptus oil...

The best ice cream scoop out there and a pint or two of Frankie + Joe's would be well-received...

If you don't have something in mind for your wife yet, these tiny sapphire beauties can be found at Flora and Henri. I tried them on way back in August and am still dreaming about them...

Finally, these two cookbooks are my most favorite from this year and would be a great addition to anyone's cookbook library. Buy them at another local favorite, Book Larder.

From My Wishlist - Holiday Edition

by Kelsi in ,

I hope you all had a wonderful, restful Thanksgiving with friends and family. And with that, the holidays are upon us.

The first thing on my wishlist this year is one of these grounds crew jackets from local Seattle company Ebbets Field Flannels. I just can't decide between this Seattle Metroplitans one...

Ebbets Seattle.jpg

Or this Portland Fuji one. (See the whole collection here.)

Ebbets Fuji.jpg

I think the Fuji jacket would look pretty fantastic with these silver Loeffler Randall boots that are also on my list...

loeffler randall carter silver.png

I love this large barrel jug from Farmhouse Pottery...

My friend Rita has enviable style and is a champion hat-wearer. She makes me want to be a hat-wearer as well. I can't decide but I think this one from Janessa Leone would be a good place to start...

Janessa Leone Lane.jpg

Or this one (also available at one of my favorite local shops Flora and Henri)...

Janessa Ila.jpg

I would also love this half apron from Gjusta Goods...

And if I could ask for anything, I would love to find a place for this classic now available in MOHAIR...

More gift ideas on the way!

December 7

by Kelsi in , ,

I am up early today. My current view...

As I wait for the boys to wake up I'm looking at cookie recipes on The New York Times and just saw Melissa Clark's video on these pistachio morning buns. Yep, I am definitely going to be making these in the coming days...

A few more gift ideas. My husband has this down sweater which is super affordable and has a cool vintage vibe...

I'd love to get this scarf for my husband (also so I can borrow it myself)...

It seems a bit wrong to be looking at these today as the temps are in the low 30s here, but holy smokes do I love these...

I bought a Nespresso Aeroccino a few months ago to make heating up milk (or almond milk) quicker and easier for making turmeric lattes, chai and hot chocolate for my son.

It is super slick. In less than a minute it heats the milk to a perfect temp that my kiddo can drink right away. This would be a cool gift with a special hot chocolate mix.

Give + Receive

Today I made a double batch of this lentil soup (since I devoured it the first time around just two days ago), poured myself a beer, put on some Bach and tackled some online holiday shopping. Here's what I'm eyeing this year for myself and others...

First off, I think this dress would be a knockout for the holiday party circuit...

This griddle from Baking Steel would make an epic gift for the cook in your life. I may have already bought this for myself...

My friend Omar has these salt and pepper grinders which I have long wanted for myself, only I don't use a salt grinder. I finally got wise and figured out I could use the other one as a spice mill and finally get rid of my old cuisinart coffee grinder that is too loud and does just a so-so job of grinding spices. So I'd love to have these...

I really love this bomber jacket from Everlane...

After hosting a crew for Thanksgiving I realized that I could really use a couple of really big 8 and 10qt stainless steel restaurant bowls like these...

A book for my pie baking best friend...

And a good book for all of us...

I already have one of these great totes which I use for everything from groceries to carting things to the studio. I could easily use another one myself and will order another for my sister-in-law...

This super soft and generously sized scarf doubles as a blanket, perfect for my travel-loving girlfriend...

I'd love to get these for my brother...

And this Lumio lamp in walnut for my design-savvy husband...

Lumio walnut.jpg

A month or so ago while having lunch with a friend, I was served a Sapporo in a glass like this which never tasted so good). I've been on the search ever since...

I will forever have at least one thing from Clare V on my wishlist. Right now I'd love to have this simple wallet clutch...

CV croc wallet clutch.jpg

A pair of these rad socks for the many Star Wars lovers in my family...

A special body scrub for my mom (and for me!)...

One of these beautiful salad bowls would make a lovely hostess gift...

And even though my wardrobe is predominately black and gray, I can't stop thinking about this scarf...

The weekend update

by Kelsi in , ,

We are two weeks into our kitchen remodel. Demo is done and new plumbing and electrical are in place! A few before photos...

Underneath the yellow 1970s lineoleum was a layer of plywood, and underneath that was the original green linoleum from when the house was built in 1940...

And underneath that is the fir subfloor...

Which will be sanded and painted white like this...

Mid demo exposing the lath and old knob and tube wiring...

New electrical...

And new plumbing. The window openings have also been cut down 4" to counter level...

New windows will go in next week and drywall will begin! In the meantime, our "new" kitchen in the dining room is serving us well.

As is our outdoor dishwashing station...

I also celebrated my 35th birthday last week and was kindly gifted some special things from my favorite Heath Ceramics, as well as a new chef's knife and this beauty from Staub...

My brother who works for Brooks also gave me a new pair of shoes that I LOVE (made even more special because they are the first shoe that he fully developed)...

My husband and I also had a date night this week and had an early dinner at Joule, one of our most favorite restaurants in the city. The best part of the date was deciding to walk across the street to Miir

I had a sweet latte which was !!!!!!!!!! and Aaron had a beer. We sat and talked and it felt reminiscent of those many hours spent lingering in coffee shops throughout my 20s. I also left wanting one of their growlers (or the half "howler") which would make a perfect last minute father's day gift...

I also want one of their camp cups.

Holiday Gift Guide - Books

by Kelsi in ,

The one thing I'd love most on my xmas list is this book.

Out of print for more than a decade, it has just been reissued. The breadth and scope of Grace's work is such that I'm surprised the book is only 408 pages...

graceandgraces.jpg

I added these three cookbooks to my collection this year and am very happy that I did...

Gluten-Free Girl American Classics Reinvented - I have followed Shauna's blog for many years. Her latest book is worth having just for her gluten-free and grain free flour mixes alone. Her pancakes and several other recipes from this book have become staples in our home. Side note: if you're the type that would rather buy a really good gluten-free AP flour than mix up your own, you can buy it directly from Shauna here!

Date Night In from Ashley Rodriguez (another Seattle local)

And 5 stars(!!!) for Genius Recipes from the folks at Food52.

Almost a year after reading this book and the subsequent whole house purge that ensued, my home has been forever changed. If you didn't jump on the bandwagon last year, now is as good a time as ever. She also has a new book coming out just after the first of the year for those of you already drinking the Kondo Kool-Aid...

A perfect book for my architectural photographer husband...

Or this one.

Piet Oudolf.jpg

I first saw the genius work of Piet Oudolf when we visited NYC last summer and saw The High Line for the first time. I came home and promptly ordered this book so I could set about recreating the same vibe in my own backyard (our ambitious spring 2016 project). I would also love his new book Hummelo.

And I am currently reading Tiny Beautiful Things and want to give it to everyone I know.

Holiday Gift Guide - For Your Leading Lady

by Kelsi in

This insanely beautiful bronze tray.

I'm addicted to these lovely and effective essential oil remedies from Hope Gillerman. It's hard to pick a favorite but I am partial to this one and this one

hori hori.jpg

This Hori Hori is my most favorite and useful garden tool. If you're local, go grab one at Niche Outside, the gorgeous shop run by Nisha Klein (of Fleurish fame). And then take a holiday shopping break with an ice cream from Kurt's next door, or venture one block over and grab a coffee or glass of sparkling wine at General Porpoise...

A subscription to Porter.

Baby & Co Ginette.jpg

I personally have my eye on these ceramic bangles from Ginette NY (available locally at Baby & Co.) I also love this necklace.

This splurge of a face oil from Vintner's Daughter is liquid gold and truly "the face oil to end all face oils."

And of course, from Everlane...

This cardigan. This and also this.

Holiday Gift Guide - For the Kiddos

by Kelsi in ,

Full Disclosure, there will be something from Everlane on pretty much every gift guide (yes, now even the little ones). My obsession continues.

everlane mini hat.jpg

I bought this adorable and super soft merino wool hat for my son and nephews.

Like Everlane, you can find something for everyone at Uniqlo

I love this jacket...

And this Star Wars parka.

My son has this sweet little kid-sized backpack (just like his Daddy's) adorned with this rad patch.

Prismacolor Art Stix (which I would also like to buy for myself)...

kid kraft guitar.jpg

My music loving son asked for a guitar this year...and a microphone to go with it.

And these Lego building plates are essential for any young Lego lover.
